First of all: What is FDE – Full Disk Encryption?
The Full Disk Encryption encodes user’s data, lying inside their Android device through a Encrypted Key. This Encrypted Key will be required again when user wants to decrypt the data.
Once encryption is successfully completed, data will be already encrypted automatically before saved in the disk. That’s quite impressive, as it is very secure.
How Encryption actually works?
Going back in Time, when Google launched their Android 3.0 Honeycomb – there was a kernel feature which acts directly on the block layer of the storage.
Since that time, all the Android devices are shipped with this feature. That is why they are able for FDE. But with latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Google has made some huge modifications and added improved features to enable FDE, even better.

This document shows: “For device implementations supporting full-disk encryption and with Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) crypto performance above 50MiB/sec, the full-disk encryption MUST be enabled by default at the time the user has completed the out-of-box setup experience.”

So from that, latest Android devices with 6.0 or higher version having AES Crypto Performance Above 50MiB/sec, will require supporting encryption of: Private Use Data Partition (Phone) as well as Public Data Partition (SC Card).

But, there might be some problems with Full Disk Encryption, Like:
- Since launch of Google’s Nexus 6, Google wanted to make Full-Disk Encryption but somehow failed to accomplish that.
- May be because of Poor Device Performance of Nexus, due to FDE.
- So, clearly FDE affects the performance of the device and makes it slower to run.
- That might be the reason because nobody would want to run their Android device run comparatively slow, just because of FDE.
- Secondly, as we discussed earlier – decryption requires the Encryption Key. By any chance, if you don’t remember the Decryption Key, then you need to Factory Reset your Android Device. That will wipe all your data which is like disaster.
Is it really necessary to make Full Disk Encryption, By Default?
In all previous Android devices, there was option for Full Disk Encryption. But it was Turned OFF by default. It we prefer it then we needed to enable it.
Most people think, in prospects of security, of course it is very important thing with which we can protect our data. And with FDE, we don’t need to worry about our data to go off into anyone’s hands, as FDE also protects our data from hackers as well as Government agencies too.

We don’t know for sure if we should go on with Full-Disk Encryption or not. But, as of now Google is introducing and makes Full-Disk Encryption for New Android 6.0 Devices.
